What is CBD?
Simply put, CBD is one of the many different chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant.
The compounds, which are called cannabinoids, work together with the body’s endocannabinoid
system in various ways. In recent decades research has been carried out that gives us more of an
insight into how CBD affects the body and its amazing therapeutic benefits. However, one thing
that CBD does not do is get you high! If someone wants to experience the psychoactive
characteristics of the cannabis plant, they would need to add some THC to the mix. The jury is
still out on many of its benefits, but researchers are continuing to study the CBD compound to
discover additional uses and benefits.
How CBD Activates the Body’s Neurological System
Two of the compounds that have been discovered in the cannabis plant are cannabidiol (CBD)
and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While they are found in the same plant, they each affect the
body in different ways, and that’s where some people might become confused. The first
difference to understand is that THC gets the user high. CBD does not. CBD activates the human
body’s own natural endocannabinoid system, which regulates the neurotransmitters. The
neurotransmitters insure that your nervous system is working well and communicating efficiently
with the brain. Once we have that connection established, the CBD can alter the signals, resulting
in therapeutic results for the user. The endocannabinoid system of the body has a major role in
managing sleep, appetite, mood, motor control, pleasure, reproduction, pain, memory and
temperature. So boosting the body’s own cannabinoids can give the user an overall improvement
in mood and the feeling that everything is OK.
The Way it Works
Now this is a bit technical, but researchers have learned how CBD interacts with the body's
endocannabinoid system. This system is actually just a group of cell receptors found naturally
within our bodies that respond differently to stimulation by various chemical molecules. The
main two types of cell receptors are the CB1 and the CB2. It so happens that THC has a similar
shape to CB1 and CB2. Because of this, THC has the ability to bind with our body's own
cannabinoid receptors and then alter the signals they send out to the brain. CBD, on the other
hand, works to increase the endocannabinoids in the body, and by working with enzymes it lifts
the persons mood but without psychoactive effects of THC. Many of the benefits of both CBD
and THC are similar, but since they work with different systems in the body, the effects are not
the same. There is not a component to CBD that makes a person high.
Therapeutic Benefits of CBD
This is where it gets exciting, and why the use of CBD is gaining in popularity. Types of usage
include CBD oil, CBD capsules, CBD help oil, CBD oil for pain and various edibles. By
naturally encouraging the body's own endocannabinoid system with CBD, scientists and
researchers are seeing positive results in the treatment of mental and physical health. Some of the
medical benefits noted include relief from epileptic seizures, chronic pain, fibromyalgia,
endometriosis, MS, Parkinson's, nausea and arthritis. Current studies are looking into CBD
effects and how it can help those battling with alcohol or opioid addiction, PTSD and anxiety.
Studies are ongoing, but it's possible that CBD can even help relieve the side effects of cancer
